I moved 3 years ago but only joined AL recently which is why its taken so long for me to review. In the past 3 years I've recommended Big John's to 5 people who all were very happy with the service.The estimate was $700 to move the contents of my one bedroom apartment which was onthe top floor of a 6 story walk up. I had heavy furniture & lots of clothes, books, CDs & kitchen items such as pots & pans, china & silverware. Overall they did a very excellent job with a not so simple problem. They were very well motivated and improvised as needed. I think it was kind of a large job for them, so e.g. they moved my sofa along the street because it didn't fit in the truck. Also, my fault, I mishandled moving my cats; I moved them first (not a good idea). In particular, the new apartment is a duplex with two front doors, but Big John's worked with me around this; they didn't open both doors at the same time. See above. My wife and I sold our NYC co-op and planned to move to our town home in Berlin, MD, but also wanted to move our NYC furniture to our Ocean City Condo across the bay which we rent out. The trip to MD from NYC is slightly more than 4 hours and the OC property is 8 miles from the Berlin town home. I conactex a least 10 moving firms and got prices and estimates.Needless to say many low balls came from the franchise type companies. They were excellent, and way better than the other two I looked at. They were very upfront about everything. They didn't try to sell me anything or tell me not to do what I wanted. They said that they would take care of everything and they did. I called them many times during the long drive and they always answered and returned my calls, even the driver. It was completely painless from scheduling the job from out of town, to going through a snow storm. They were accommodating and worked around my schedule. The two movers sent were excellent, professional and did a great job. They moved my belongings down (5) flights of stairs and loaded my truck.
I reached out to Big John's to determine what my moving costs would be. They came to my apartment and provided me with an estimate. The person providing the estimate listened to my concerns/needs and provided me with several options. He understood that I didn't have a lot of disposable cash and he clearly explained all of the options. So, I did not choose to use Big John's I had their agent come to give an estimate and he left a folder full of recommendations for his company and a booklet of helpful hints for packing. His professional manner and immediate estimate was appreciated; however after having two other companies come for estimates (names I got from Angie's List), I found this company pricier. I did not choose Big John's.
They were prompt, friendly, efficient, and good-humored. I was very impressed by their care for my possessions and for the structures: I don't think they made a single scratch on the walls of the twisty staircase, and they helped me put protective felt pads on every piece of furniture being placed in the new apartment, which has beautiful wood floors.
